Derek Torrellas, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States New Haven Post 12150, recently received the Department of Connecticut’s top leadership award. The VFW Connecticut All-State Post Commanders award was presented by Past Department of Connecticut Commander Robert Bailey at the VFW New haven in February. The award, a signature white hat, is based on a full evaluation of a post’s participation in VFW programs, attention to administration and veterans outreach. Torrellas, a resident of Hamden and former Southern Connecticut State University Veterans Association president and graduate, is a charter member of Post 12150 and has served as post commander since 2018.
