ARCHIVES: Reclaiming a Park and Accenting Its Waterfront

WHEN Michael Singer used to drive through New Haven on his way up and down the New England coast, he would cast a fleeting glance at the harbor, Long Island Sound and the long strip of marsh and parkland visible to motorists zooming by on Interstate 95. He had no idea what that view really offered or that one day he would lead a team of people working to reclaim the park for the residents of New Haven and for anyone else who ventures off the highway. “I never understood the site at all,” Mr. Singer said, “although it’s the first place where you actually see the water as you drive east. I had a prejudicial idea of it as almost a nonexistent place because that’s what it appears to be as you drive by. But if you stand on the site, you feel the power of the water.”
