Concert and Two Wreath-Laying Ceremonies Slated for Elm City Remembrances

New Haven – Marking two decades of patriotic remembrance, Elm City and regional residents are invited to attend the 20th Annual Memorial Day Concert, as well as two traditional wreath-laying ceremonies on Sunday, May 28.

Orchestra New England (orchestranewengland.org) will headline the family-friendly and FREE patriotic concert to be held at 5:00 p.m. at the John Lyman Center for the Performing Arts (501 Crescent St., New Haven) on the Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) campus.

Earlier in the day at 1:00 p.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park on Long Wharf Drive there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the 11-foot-tall, V-shaped monument. Marine Aviation Reservist Staff Sgt. Derek Torrellas will be the featured speaker; Col. Kenneth Gertz (Ret.) will be the master of ceremonies; Joanne Papapietro the soloist; and Master Sgt. Clifford Potter (Ret) will offer the Soldier’s Prayer. A veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, Torrellas recently returned from his fifth deployment, this one with the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force South (SPMAGTF South) to Honduras and Haiti for a disaster relief mission in the wake of Category IV storm, Hurricane Matthew last fall.

At 3:00 p.m. at the World War Memorial Flagpole on the New Haven Green, Sgt. Robert Reed (Fmr) will be the featured speaker; Master Sgt. Frank Alvarado (Ret.) will be the master of ceremonies; Ruth Rosa the soloist; and VFW New Haven Chaplain and Cpl. James Namnoum (Fmr) will offer the Memorial Day Prayer. Reed is a decorated Marine combat veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm and President and CEO of Transition-Integrated-Resources LLC.
